The rhinoplasty aims to change the size and shape of the nose through surgical techniques. The rhinoplasty is also one of the most popular facial cosmetic surgery procedures. If you think you’d benefit from a rhinoplasty procedure, then it can seem daunting to think about what will happen. Here’s a quick guide to rhinoplasty as you plan your consultation with Dr. Husni.
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, sometimes called a “nose job”, can be a cosmetic procedure. The decision to undergo rhinoplasty is not necessarily based on vanity. One application of rhinoplasty is to correct conditions like sleep apnea that impede proper breathing. People whose nose is disfigured by trauma or birth defects benefit both physically and emotionally from the reconstruction of their nose. It’s performed by manipulating the underlying structures of the nose that consist of bone, cartilage, and soft tissue.
The Pre-Surgical Exam
During the pre-surgical exam, or consultation, Dr. Husni determines if rhinoplasty is right for you by looking at your nose, surrounding features, and underlying structure. Additionally, this is the time to talk about your medical history and any concerns you have about the procedure. Also, you’ll come up with a surgical plan based on Dr. Husni’s recommendations.
You’ll also be asked about your reasons for choosing rhinoplasty and what you hope to achieve from the procedure. Dr. Husni will talk about your recovery period and what to expect at length so you can begin to prepare.
Preparing For Surgery
Smoking increases the risk of post-operative infection and prolongs the time it takes to heal. You will need to stop smoking well before surgery and until after your recovery. You may also need to stop taking certain medications before and after surgery, so be sure to discuss any prescriptions you have with Dr. Husni. In the days before surgery, you should prepare your home for your recovery period by making sure you have someone to look after you and your home is well-stocked with food and supplies. Dr. Husni will provide instructions on everything you’ll need during this time.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and can be performed with two different incision types. The first is the open incision which is placed across the columella, or strip of skin between the nostrils. A closed incision is contained completely within the nostrils. Each has its benefits, and Dr. Husni will discuss each one during your consultation.
Once an incision is made, the inner structures of the nose can be reshaped according to your goals. In some cases, cartilage grafts can be taken from areas like the ear or ribcage. Once the ideal shape is achieved using techniques to change areas like the bridge, tip, and sides of the nose, the incisions are closed.
The Recovery Process
The recovery period for a rhinoplasty procedure is one of the longest out of any cosmetic surgery. You can expect swelling that will gradually subside over the months after surgery, with full results continuing to emerge even one year after surgery. You’ll likely experience bruising and dryness around your eyes, which can be managed with ice packs and eye drops. You should avoid wearing glasses during your initial recovery, since this can leave indentations. You’ll be asked to wear a splint for the first week, after which it will be removed during a follow-up appointment. During your consultation, Dr. Husni will make sure you know what to expect during your recovery.
