Five Helpful Tips for Botox First-Timers

If there were a safe, fast, and effective way to address the most common signs of aging, would you take it? Millions of Americans have answered “yes” to that no-brainer with regular Botox injections. Now the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure around, it is still largely misunderstood by those who have never had it.

As a plastic surgeon, I receive more questions about Botox than any other treatment option. Here are a few tips I share with those considering the procedure.

Botox can be helpful for those young and old

1. Have Realistic Expectations

Like any other cosmetic procedure, Botox has its limitations. It cannot magically erase wrinkles or halt the aging process indefinitely. As such, those who believe these injections are the modern equivalent to the Fountain of Youth often leave disappointed. If, however, you simply want to see a short-term improvement in problem areas, Botox may be your best option.

2. Choose an Experienced Plastic Surgeon

Remember those horror stories about botched Botox procedures? They still happen because most new patients assume that any doctor can use a syringe. That includes dermatologists, gynecologists, dentists, even psychiatrists! But because those medical professionals have less experience with the procedure than plastic surgeons, they’re more likely to make a mistake. They could, for example, inject the Botox too deeply or in the wrong place, resulting in less-than-stellar patient outcomes. For those reasons, I recommend seeing a reputable plastic surgeon for Botox treatments.

3. Expect Side Effects

It may not happen to every patient, but it is possible to experience some bruising at the injection site. As result, I often instruct new patients to avoid scheduling any special events for at least a week after their first treatment.

4. Start at Any Age

In addition to reducing the appearance of wrinkles you already have, there is compelling evidence that Botox can prevent deep folds and furrows from ever happening. It is not surprising, then, that younger patients are embracing the procedure as a long-term treatment option.

5. Plan Ahead

If you are pleased with the results of your procedure, schedule another one three or four months in the future. That is generally how long it takes for the effects of a standard Botox treatment to wear off.
